Eat what's put before you. #laryngectomee, #laryngectomy

I was reading in Luke this morning.
I was really disappointed. First in what I read, then in myself.

Luke 10:7, 8

"Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they give you...."
"Whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you."

Please say it ain't so!

Growing up I was a very picky eater. I wouldn't even eat casseroles, pizza or spaghetti because it looked like someone had thrown up on the plate. All the food mixed up together. Nasty. Nowadays, I'm not as bad as that. I love my casseroles, pizza and spaghetti; Still not fond of fruits and veggies. I have never been good going to other peoples homes to eat. They most likely would serve something I don't like.

Funny story: In high school our youth choir went to Texas to sing at a local church. We were divided up and stayed with different families in that church. My friend, Gail, and I were set up together. Time for breakfast came and they served us cantaloupe among other things, but they put cantaloupe on a plate in front of me instead of letting me choose whether or not I wanted it. I hated fruit, but my friend was eating all hers so when the lady turned her back I put all my cantaloupe on my friend's plate.  My friend, with her mouthful of food, opened her eyes real big as if to ask "what are you doing." I found out later my friend didn't like cantaloupe either but she was just being nice. Ugh. I felt so bad.

Another funny story: My mother-in-law knew I was a picky eater, but one day I said to myself, "I'm going to eat whatever she cooks." That night it was tuna casserole. The worst! But I ate it. WELL....mother-in-law was so happy she found something I would eat that she fixed that every time we went over there. It was really very sweet of her.

After surgery many laryngectomees are unable to smell, to taste. So I figured if I lost my sense of taste I might eat more healthy.  For the first few weeks I had a feeding tube in my stomach so I didn't know yet if I could taste. The good new is I still have my senses of smell and taste. The bad news is I still have my senses of smell and taste. Which means I still hate fruits and vegetables.

I have gotten better at eating what I don't like. I know I should be grateful that I have food. The Lord has provided for us well. Thousands of people starve to death. I am able to choose what food I buy, the food I like. But when I am served what I don't like, I am grateful for the friendship and love that goes into the meal. It's all about your focus.

Blessings,

Mary
